Do you wear pads or tampons? Or is this topic totally TMI? Yeah, I thought so…but in an effort to keep it real with you ladies, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I have never EVER worn a tampon.
Growing up, my mother didn’t allow me to wear tampons (I won't give you details as to why, although I'm sure most of you who know how Asian moms are will understand), and to this day I still wear pads. I know, I know, this is probably TMI—but you've all seen me without makeup and I’m going to keep it real here!
Beyond my mother’s wishes, here are a few of my own reasons why I prefer pads over tampons:
1) I think that gravity should do all the work. If it's meant to leak out (eww, I know, but bear with me!) then I don't want to plug it all up (ewww, I know, I know!).
2) I would get worried if I left my tampon in too long. I get paranoid with things like that and with so many other things to worry about, I want to worry less when I’m on my period.
3) Pads are easier. I mean, I’ve read the instructions that come with a box of tampons—I’ve even tried to use a tampon once (tried, and failed miserably!). Believe me, I was in the bathroom for 30 minutes and ended up like a contortionist in the stall. Not pretty.
What about you, do you wear pads or tampons? Or do you keep it all natural and just let it flow! HAHAHAHA! Omg, I'm terrible! ;)

*UPDATE* October 28, 2011
Hi everyone,
I received hundreds of emails, messages and questions from girls with questions for me following this post. I love giving good advice, but I honestly didn't have any to offer : / ... Which is why Being Girl and Tampax teamed up to create YouTube's BeingGirl, a channel with topics about growing up and more. Check it out and watch the video below if you have any questions or concerns :)
I use both. Depending on the occasion, really. If I'm going to be lazing around the house or grocery shopping, I just wear those comfy overnight pads so there're no leakage worries.
But if I'm going out and dressing up, I adore tampons. You literally *forget* your period's here cos you don't feel it AT ALL (if you put it in right, cos my sister said she could feel it and it sucked). 'Cept when you go pee and you can see the little string sticking out (ha-ha).
But *because* it's so comfy and you forget bout your period, people leave it in for too long and get that shock syndrome thing. Like my auntie. My mum and friends brought her to a clinic when she passed out and the female doctor literally just pulled out the tampon and my aunt was fine, HA.
Haha, toking about the product i use when i am on my period i use only pads.Yep, Michelle,i have an Asian mum like yours and she disallowed me to use tampons so i had to wear pads instead.I don't think i would ever tried using a tampons cause i am afraid then if i leave it for too long, consequences will be dire. For pads, i prefer those slim ones that are really confortable and have good absorbence. :)
Hey Michelle and all you lovely ladies! I have to tell you about something you may not have heard about (because I know I hadn't!) It's called a Menstrual Cup. Yes I know, it sounds disgusting, but it is actually amazing! I used to use tampons, or a mix of tampons and pads on those heavy days! I hated them both. I bought a Diva Cup two years ago and I'd never dream of looking back. It is eco friendly, because it is a reusable silicone cup that just catches the flow. You can wear it longer than a tampon, and there is little to no risk of TSS. There are special cleaners to use so you are super sanitary, and I think every girl should look into it and at least consider using one. I KNOW it sounds super weird! I was with you before I tried it. Its seriously changed my life. I wouldn't dream of using anything else, for the rest of my whole life. Look it up please, let me know if you are going to try it and let me know if you use one too! I wish I could send a message to every girl about this, because it needs to be WAY more out there. Diva Cup is where I got mine! :)
Has anyone ever considered trying alternatives to pads and tampons such as menstrual cups or washable cloth pads. i have tried both and have never had a problem with leakage or anything.
i've always used pads, even at camp. I've tried to use tampons, like, twice, but each time i didnt do it right and it just felt weird. I like pads i think they are faster and easier. and most girls don't know that even when you go swimming you don't need a tampon, the water actually blocks your bleeding. my swim coach told me that and at first i didnt believe it but i didnt use a tampon once this summer and i went swimming everyday -even on my period. so even if you are a swimmer, you still don't need to stray from your comfert zone :)
i'm really surprised you never used a tampon! I feel sort of releived. I've never used one either.. I tried once but failed miserably as well, and I'm 21.
