In Hong Kong

Wow, I finally got my rest. 20 hours flight from Florida to San Fran to Hong Kong is not fun (I loath flying…period), but I survived. I got situated at my hotel, but I could not sleep. My internal clock is all sorts of fugged up. Instead I just took photos and waited for my friend to arrive in Hong Kong. I went out sight seeing and there is so much shopping. Ironically I am in no mood to shop (I outshop myself to death whenever I visit New York) , but hopefully I will soon because the prices are not so bad (but not as cheap as I expected). I’ll try and update from time to time. I cannot wait to get home and see my baby, Mr. Bun Bun…

I also decided to cut my bangs before my trip. I used kitchen shears, but hey, it works!

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday…or err…Tuesday for me.

Cheers

Kindly,

-M

    Hi Michelle,
Welcome to Hong Kong. I’ve been following your blog since your New York food entry where you visited Cafe Habana. A friend of mine who’s also a foodie sent me a link to your entry cause we had gone to the same spot the last time I was in New York. Looked like you enjoyed it just as much as I did

Anyhow, I’m not sure if you’d want some food recommendations. But I would be more than happy to give you a few tips. As I’m sure you’ve heard Hong Kong is really really famous for it’s food, apart from many other things. Below are some of my favorites

    Wonton Noodles:
*Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop (Arguably the best wonton noodles and Congee in Hong Kong)
International Finance Center (IFC) Shop 3016-3018
    Telephone – (852) 2295 0101

*Mak’s Noodles (one of Anthony Bourdain’s favorites) – Really excellent soup base.
    Mak’s Noodles 麥奀雲吞麵世家
    77 Wellington Street, Central
    Hong Kong
    中環威靈頓街77號地下

    Seafood:
*Hing Kee Restaurant (避風塘興記) – Famous for Duck Noodles, Salt and Pepper Mantis Shrimp & Spicy Clams
    1/F, Bowa House 180 Nathan Road Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong T: +852 2722 0022. Hours: 6pm – 5am

    Dim Sum:
There are a few really great places in Hong Kong, but it really depends on what you’re looking for.
If you’re feeling like spending a few bucks you can go to the

*Four Seasons Hotel Chinese Restaurant Lung King Heen (one of the only 3 star michelin restaurants in Hong Kong. But it’s pricey)

    I usually take friends to

*Fu Sing Shark Seafood Restaurant 富聲魚翅海鮮酒家 (for Dim sum and BBQ pork)
1/F Sunshine Plaza, 353 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. (5 minutes walk from MTR Causeway Bay Station Exit C – Causeway Bay Plaza Phase I)
    灣仔駱克道353號三湘大廈1樓
    Tel: 28930881
    Opening Hours: 11:00 – 15:00 & 18:00 – 23:00 Daily

    Local to Hong Kong
*Fook Lam Moon – (Nicknamed the Tycoon’s Cafeteria – as all of Hong Kong’s Richest and Most Powerful dine here)
Address: 35-45 Johnston Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong.
    Phone: (852)-2866-0663
Food: Everything is good here – their crispy skin chicken with lemon is one of the best chicken i’ve ever had in my life.

*Sung Kee – Salt baked Chicken & Lotus Root Cakes
This place is where you go if you want some Hong Kong Home style cooked comfort food. I’m a regular here. Super yum
Address: 1/F, Hip Sang Building, 107-115 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, China. Tel: 25752236 .

For Fish ball noodles go to:
*Shan Loon Tse Kee Fish Ball : (this place has been open for 60 years and is probably the best in Hong Kong)
    80-82 Old Main Street
    G/F
    Aberdeen
    Tel: 25523809

As for shopping, I’m not an expert by any means. But I would say the places some of the people recommended above are a bit more for tourist. I would recommend Grandville Street in Tsim Sha Tsui, and Island Beverly in Causeway bay are two places where there are a lot of small local boutiques.

For Night life: Lan Kwai Fong is the place to be, is a area in Central where there is a collection of bars and clubs. Thats the only place you’ll need to really see. The top clubs now are probably Dragon i (Wednesday night is Ladies Night), Volar, Play, you might also want to go to Lan Kwai Fong Hotel roof top bar called Azure for a awesome view. Otherwise if you are in Kowloon side you might want to go to 1 Peking Road, to a place called Aqua. or right near there in the Peninsula Hotel Bar/Restaurant called Felix. Both places have the most amazing views in Hong Kong, you miht not want to stay there all night but defintiely stop by for a picture or two. Oh the Bathrooms in Felix were designed by Philippe Starck and are amazing. LOL

Anyhow, I hope that helps. Not sure how much time you got but it should be a good start. Do let me know if you need any help with reservations or anything. I’d be more than happy to help you make them.

Feel free to email me if you need a guide or need/have any other recommendations, questions or concerns.

    Have a great time!

    Best,
    Brian

Have a nice stay in HK! Have you visited causeway bay yet? Most tourists go there for shopping. Don’t forget to check out Time Square at Causeway Bay. The mall is at least 13 floor high (with Jill Stuart and other Asian cosmetic brands at basement levels)

I don’t mean to be rude, but I’m curious…what happened to Thumper your rabbit? How come you said that you recently adopted Mr. Bun Bun – I thought you adopted him last year?

Oh, and who has Mia now? Sorry I’m a big pet person and I hate seeing animals get tossed around from home to home. I believe we’re responsible for what we adopt/bring home for life. Not saying you’re doing it but I seem to recall that you adopted Mia from the SPCA in 2006 and now you no longer have her :(

    Anyways have fun in HK!

    Hi Michelle,

If you want the “shop ’till you drop” experience try going to Granville Road in TST and/or Nathan Road. They have a wide variety of trendy shops from clothing, shoes and accessories that won’t break your budget.

Have fun and eat some dim sum for me!

    Spelling/Word Choice Tip:

The word “loathe” as in the verb, “to hate,” has an /e/ at the end. The “loath” you used is an adjective that means “unwilling.” Example: “I am loath to get on planes because I loathe flying.”
